Will 'temporary' surveillance cameras remain in downtown Vancouver?
|
March 2, 2010. Temporary surveillance cameras installed in the downtown area for the Olympics would become the norm, if Vancouver Police had their way. However, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says there is currently no appetite to keep the cameras up.
Robertson promises the City will be in discussions with police. But VPD Deputy Chief Doug LePard says they would like to see them stick around. "We've been pretty clear we would like to see cameras in the Entertainment District, but that is really an issue for the city to deal with. We're not actively involved in discussions about that right now."
The cameras were installed by the Integrated Security Unit (the Olympic police force), but Robertson says with the heavy police presence during the Games, they weren't really needed.
