Vancouver School Board

Vancouver School Board
The Vancouver School Board was founded in 1886. It serves over 56,000 students in elementary and secondary schools, 3,000 adult students in adult basic education and over 40,000 students in continuing education classes. It has an operating budget of approximately $405 million.

All Vancouver School Board schools provide a comprehensive educational program, as well as special programs to meet a wide variety of student needs. Vancouver schools follow the British Columbia provincial curriculum. Each school is located in one of four administrative areas of the city: Fraserview, Jericho, Marineview and Sunrise. An Associate Superintendent oversees each Area.

Elementary schools include Grades Kindergarten through Grade 7, with primary annexes generally offering programs in Kindergarten through Grade 3 or Grade 4.

Vancouver Secondary Schools enrol students in Grades 8 through Grade 12. In British Columbia, graduation from secondary school occurs after successful completion of Grade 12. All VSB secondary schools offer a comprehensive program which provides students with the academic courses needed to enter university, college, or other post-secondary education. The schools also have a variety of career programs, alternative programs, and special education programs.

The VSB continually looks for innovative ways to enhance programs and use our resources effectively. Every activity of this school district is undertaken to support the learning needs of our students, a commitment reflected in the Board's approval of annual District Directions. Teachers have the central role in supporting student learning. School principals and vice principals lead and administer the schools. Support staff provide the assistance needed for the educational program.

The Vancouver School Board, a group of nine school trustees, is elected at large every three years by Vancouver residents. The community elects the Board to represent them in the conduct of public education, and to exercise their judgement in setting policies and making decisions.

The Vancouver School Board's District Directions identify special priorities and goals that guide focused activities for the school year.

The Superintendent of Schools, under the general direction of the board, is responsible for the organization, administration, supervision and evaluation of all educational programs, and the operation of schools, as well as the overall supervision and direction of staff.

The Senior Management Team of the district is headed by the Superintendent of Schools, and includes the four Associate Superintendents-Area, the Associate Superintendent of Learning Services, the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, the Director of Facilities and Supply Services, and the Secretary Treasurer, who is the corporate financial officer of the school district.
