Vancouver Technical was recognized by the Canadian Education Association in 1995 as one of twenty-one "exemplary" secondary schools in Canada for the enormous diversity of programs available to students, and for its atmosphere of tolerance and multiculturalism. Their report observes, "Tech has implemented a schools-within-a-school approach, a drop-out prevention strategy frequently recommended but less often put into practice".
Vancouver Technical is a comprehensive secondary school enrolling 1870 students in Grades 8-12. It offers a diverse academic program which includes Advanced Placement courses in English, French, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics; electives in Business Education, Fine Arts, Home Economics, including the only Hairdressing Career Preparation and Apprenticeship program in the District, Physical Education, and Technology Education; and second language instruction in English, French, Mandarin, and Spanish.
Extra-curricular opportunities for students abound in Art, Athletics, Performing Arts, and Service.
Vancouver Technical was founded on its current site in 1928 as a vocational/technical school, and for 12 years exclusively offered technical pre-employment courses. The school's industry-standard shops, which are a legacy of this period, are well used today in our comprehensive Technology Education program. The current teaching and support staff of over 100 people serve a multicultural student and parent population which includes families from many countries speaking forty-seven languages.
