In 1927, Templeton Junior High School, named after Mr. William Templeton, a former Mayor of Vancouver, was built. Mr. Fitch became the first Principal of Templeton when it opened in the fall of 1927. The original school building was constructed to house grade 7, 8 and 9 students. In 1956-57 the school enrolled its first Grade 10 students. In September of 1963, Grade 11 was added, Grade 12 was included in the following year. The graduation class of June 1965 made Templeton a comprehensive Secondary School. Since then, Templeton has offered students the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of courses and programs.
In the early 1960's in order to keep abreast of the changing needs in the community, a science/home economics wing and vocational wing was added. A new gymnasium was also constructed in keeping with the trend towards physical fitness and to accommodate the growing school population. By 1970, the school population had outgrown the space available in the old library. Therefore, a new library was built adjacent to the cafeteria, in a space previously occupied by student bike racks. Finally, the most recent addition to the school complex, the Templeton Park Pool, was completed in 1975. Both the school and community have benefited immensely from this facility. Recently the school Library has been completely remodelled and now includes a large computer room where students can research or write essays for various school subjects. The Career Centre, located in front of the Library checkout counter, helps students to plan for the future.
"Pro Bono Omnium" is the school motto at Templeton. Literally interpreted, this motto means, "for the good of all". It was chosen by the first Principal, Mr. Fitch, and the staff and students of the school in 1927. It still aptly describes the spirit of Templeton. All the students, administration, teachers, custodial, para-professional and support staff and parents work together to keep the school progressive, democratic and abreast of the modern developments in education.
Today, Templeton's population has grown to approximately 1150 students and 100 staff members. The student population represents the variety of cultures which live in our community. In fact, a third of the population of the school is fluently bilingual, meaning that nearly forty different languages and dialects can be spoken throughout the school. We are truly a multicultural school community.
