Vancouver Profile

John Oliver
John Oliver Secondary has a proud history of service to South Vancouver since 1921. A fire destroyed the old building in 1959, but in the meantime the current building on 41st Avenue was erected in 1950, with the subsequent addition and expansion of technical studies shops, cafeteria and music wing during the following years.

John Oliver is truly a comprehensive school. Students can expect a strong foundation in academic skills, through both the regular program and the John Oliver Mini School, and excellent advanced academic offerings for students wanting to progress to an enormous variety of post secondary options. As well, John Oliver has some of the best Technology shop spaces in the city, and an expanding and vibrant teaching cafeteria, which is providing through its growing commercial catering services, excellent experience and training opportunities for our students. John Oliver has always been known for its musical programs, particularly in the areas of voice and choir, and this tradition continues with outstanding choir and jazz choir and jazz choir groups. As well, our Jokers sports' teams continue a proud tradition of athleticism in a wide variety of sports from cricket, through volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, girls' field hockey, ice hockey and the only football team in the Vancouver public school system.

John Oliver is truly multi cultural. Over the years, South Vancouver has welcomed newcomers from all parts of the world, and our school encompasses students from over 40 countries. This gives the school a rich cultural history to draw on during celebrations and dances. John Oliver students are passionate about the school, and our Alumni Association is large and active and continues to contribute to the life of the school.

The diversity of the needs of our student population has inspired in John Oliver some unusual and effective ways to make JO a welcoming, safe place where students can feel at home and can contribute in positive ways to the life of their learning community. Unique in the district, JO has divided the school into neighbourhoods with individual names and characteristics where students and staff take particular responsibility for cleanliness, safety and most importantly, for celebration during the varied seasons of the year. A key feature of this program is the offering of Advisory every morning in multi-grade "homeroom" groupings. Here students can prepare for the day, hear the daily announcements, and have the benefit, not only of each other's support, but also that of an extra teacher who is not involved in other academic parts of the student's life. Grade 8 students are welcomed into the school by our Links Crew Leaders, Grade 12 students who offer them peer support, guidance and real connectivity to their new High School throughout the year.
