David Thompson is a comprehensive, multicultural school serving 1950 students in grades 8 through 12. Thirty-seven languages, other than English, are spoken in the homes of our students. Eighty percent of our students speak languages other than English at home. Within the building there is a staff of 140 teachers, support, office and custodial staff.
The school emphasizes academic achievement, student leadership and service to others. Each of these areas is supported and reinforced by staff, committed to maintaining a professional learning community at David Thompson. This unity of purpose contributes to a school environment in which both students and staff are helpful, cooperative, respectful and caring.
Student achievement in the areas of academics, student leadership and service is reflected in school awards for academics, service and athletics. For example, one quarter of students in grades 8 - 12 achieved honour roll student recognition with a greater than 73% (B) average; 437 students received an Awards Certificate and 574 students received credit in the Passport to Education program.
David Thompson boasts a vibrant and balanced Fine Arts Program that promotes the full complement of visual and performing arts courses. For the past two years the Dance Program has hosted the annual District Dance Festival, and last year our Drama Department captured several prestigious awards at the District Drama Festival. In addition to traditional choral and wind ensembles, the Music Program also offers an orchestral strings program and a formal track for guitar studies. The Visual Arts Program is adding state of the art equipment to their publishing technology expertise, and this year hosted, 'Portraits of Our Culture', a successful District Art Show that culminated with the release of a commemorative book bearing the same title.
