Sir Winston Churchill is a comprehensive school of approximately 2,000 students in grades 8 - 12, supported by over 100 teachers and 3 support staff. With over 40 first-language groups, the school's student population is decidedly multicultural. Churchill offers a rich and varied program that includes traditional courses as well as extensive Art, Business Education, Music, Drama, Home Economics, ESL and Technology programs. Our Journalism class recently won an international award for its newspaper.
Approximately 90% of our students choose to attend post-secondary institutions. Academic excellence is a priority with students and parents and many students each year are recognized for their academic achievements. Churchill graduates have received provincial scholarships at a rate in excess of twenty percent of each year's graduating class. Last year Churchill's International Baccalaureate students achieved the highest results in the history of the program, with a success rate far higher than the world-wide average. Churchill students have the opportunity to participate in many Math contests, English Essay contests, Reach For the Top, Geography competitions, and oration contests in both French and English. However, the philosophy at Churchill remains, 'High Achievement for all in a community of care, commitment, and concern'. The progress of every student is important at Churchill, and the staff is actively looking at how to best meet the needs of all students.
Churchill teachers have earned recognition for their outstanding teaching. Three have been awarded Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence, and one has earned a Distinguished Teaching Award. Many of the IB teachers lead workshops world-wide. Churchill teachers, like many of their students, are talented in a variety of areas. One of the highlights of Churchill is 'Bruce and the Bulldogs', a band of teachers which plays at special events.
