Granville Island |
Where else in the world can rusty tin-sided factories boast rebirth as a Public Market, an art school, shops, restaurants, theatres, galleries, a hotel, and a great deal more?
It's a remarkable thing, this island in the middle of a city of two million. Embracing the surrounding metropolitan bustle, Granville Island's ambiance is matchless; its gritty, industrial past is proudly displayed in today's people-friendly, artistic, and energetic incarnation.
The centrepiece of the Island shopping experience, the Public Market is an irresistible emporium of green grocers, butchers, bakers, fishmongers, importers, ethnic food sellers, craft vendors, sweet stands, florists and casual eateries. It also features a wine shop and a micro-roaster of organic coffee. Everything in the Public Market is on display, from bakery backrooms to a mini fudge-making factory. There's something here for everyone! Fifty permanent vendors and a constantly changing array of farmers, artisans and cottage industry food producers are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
Granville Island's unique location gives it a distinct advantage when it comes to supporting activities and recreation. Because it lies at the heart of the city and is also surrounded by water, the Island can sustain many distinct pursuits, from boat tours, to city tours, to water activities, to kids programs. And even if you're not quite the active type, watching everyone else do their thing can be just as fun. Granville Island manages to offer something different for everyone. It's the Island way.
