VANOC applauds BC Government leadership in helping athletes reach the podium in 2010

Vancouver - The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) today praised the Premier of British Columbia for his leadership in recognizing the importance of providing resources to help prepare Canadian athletes for podium performances in 2010.
Premier Gordon Campbell announced the BC Government will invest $10 million in Canadian high performance sport. Five million will be directed to the Own the Podium-2010 program with another $5 million going towards the support of summer sport athletes.
"As the host province of the 2010 Winter Games, the BC Government is making a tremendous contribution for our Canadian athletes who will strive to reach the podium five years from now," said VANOC CEO John Furlong.
"This announcement caps off what has been an outstanding week for sport. With the Government of Canada's increased sport funding in Budget 2005 and RBC Financial Group's commitment to Canadian athletes through its new partnership with VANOC, we're clearly all working together to produce great Games and great results for our athletes in 2010."
Own the Podium - 2010 includes a plan to support and develop promising athletes in order to increase the number of potential medallists in various sports at the 2010 Games. The program calls for a new approach to sport delivery supported by the federal government and sport leaders in Canada as well as a $110-million total increase in funding for winter sports over the next five years. That funding goal is becoming increasingly more achievable given current and anticipated commitments from government and corporate sponsors.
VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010.
