Saputo to supply packaged dairy products for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

A wide variety of Saputo packaged dairy products will soon bring the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games into kitchens across Canada. With the announcement today of Saputo as an Official Supplier of packaged dairy products for the 2010 Winter Games, not only will a selection of its packaged dairy products display the Official Supplier mark, it will also provide packaged dairy products to the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams leading up to the Games. Additionally, Saputo will supply the same products to the Athletes’ Villages during the Games.

The Quebec-based company’s $3 million, five-year partnership with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will see Saputo’s packaged dairy products, including among others those sold under the Saputo, Armstrong and Dairyland brands, supplied to the Vancouver and Whistler Olympic and Paralympic Villages and at venues during the 2010 Winter Games. Saputo will also be the Official Supplier of packaged dairy products for the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams competing in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

“It is with great pride that we join the Vancouver 2010 team to support this prestigious international event that celebrates physical performance at its best,” said Lino Saputo, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Saputo Inc. “Like the athletes competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as a company, we too strive for personal best, encourage growth and believe in the pursuit of personal dreams. These principles lead us to believe that every individual must challenge themselves as they attempt to achieve their goals, consistent with the spirit of the Olympic Games.”

“Saputo has a tradition in supporting athletes from the grassroots level through to the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Cathy Priestner Allinger, Executive Vice President, Sport and Games Operations at VANOC. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome on board this successful Canadian and international company dedicated to quality, people and growth.”

During today’s event, Dasha Gaïazova, a Calgary-based National team cross-country skier training for the 2010 Winter Games, and a recipient of Saputo bursaries, addressed the gathering by audio from the World Cup circuit. “Saputo truly believes in the virtue of sport and really encourages athletes to attain their goals. When they first began sponsoring me in 2003, I was not even a member of the Canadian team, but they believed in me. I am excited to hear that athletes from around the world will now also benefit from Saputo’s encouragement.”

Saputo believes that physical activity and sport represent a means towards creating a better society and a way for individuals to discover their personalities, develop their skills and learn the fundamentals of teamwork. They have partnered with many organizations such as the Québec Foundation for Athletic Excellence, providing bursaries to athletes at all levels across Canada, and the Jeux du Québec where Saputo has been a sponsor for the last five years. With Saputo providing support to soccer athletes from amateur to professional level — including to the Québec Soccer Federation whose amateur soccer membership is approximately 175,000 players and to the United Soccer League’s Montréal Impact professional soccer team — their involvement with the 2010 Winter Games is a logical fit.
