Australian awarded job of Executive Producer for 2010 Olympic Ceremonies |
It's up to an Australian to make us look good during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The pressure is already on for David Atkins, today named as Executive Producer for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Ceremonies.
David Atkins Enterprises comes with previous Games experience, having produced the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Sydney 2000 Summer Games, and the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar. They say they'll collaborate with a world-class team of Canadians to 'tell the unique story of Canada' through the Games Ceremonies. They'll also rely on top people from Canada's music, producing, creative and events industries.
While Atkins isn't giving any hints to the content of the 2010 ceremonies, many Vancouverites hope it will be a drastic improvement over our highly-criticized Closing Ceremonies performance at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin. That one highlighted ice fishing, hockey players on roller blades, a giant Inukshuk, and what some called a lack-lustre performance by Avril Lavigne.
People on the streets of Vancouver gave us various opinions on what makes for a great show. "I hope it's big, it has to be big for Vancouver....any type of performer that can get the crowd going I'd say is the most important thing. Incorporate more of Canadian society as opposed to just what they portrayed at the closing ceremonies in Turin."
Others said they didn't mind the 'cheese factor', "There's no reason to be afraid of being Canadian, we don't wave our flags often, but when we wave it, we wave it justly."
It may be a challenge to put on the ceremonies at BC Place though. George Orr with BCIT's Broadcast Communications Department says one good thing about producing this show is it will be indoors, so it doesn't matter if it rains (or snows). "The bad thing is, you're in a little space. Opening ceremonies are usually enormous spectacles, of grand spector and grand sweep and they're as big as the stadium will allow. The trouble of being inside BC Place is....it's kind of a little box."
Orr says Atkins' crew should have enough experience to handle it.
